Individualization is a painful process. The descent from ‘we’ of collective consciousness, and birth of ‘I’ involves struggle and effort. Like a butterfly breaking free from its cocoon we must each reach for life. We are empowered in our effort by the natural drive of evolution. The life-pulse fuels the ego, which needs no encouragement to compete, naturally wanting to be the best of the species, the prettiest, cleverest, strongest and fastest. This is the primeval urge to grow, survive and thrive. At first, like a surge from a newly tapped wellspring, the ego comes gushing out to swamp all other qualities and personal energies.

Observe the self-centredness of even the most cared-for and balanced child as their ego emerges and they become a tyrant totally absorbed in their self, their needs, and having it all their way. If the child isn’t helped back into balance by connecting with their high Self they become trapped in low self-esteem and live from the ego’s unbalanced characteristics; sometimes being nervous, lethargic and submissive, and other times impatient, intolerant, demanding and stubborn.
